How to Use This Tool
Australian visas use English levels: Functional, Vocational, Competent, Proficient and Superior. Enter your scores for each part of your test and the converter shows the highest level you meet, plus whether you meet the Student visa and Temporary Graduate (485) minimums.

Plain-English answers to the questions we are asked most often.
What IELTS score is Competent English?
At least 6 in each of listening, reading, writing and speaking. For PTE Academic, tests taken from 7 August 2025 need at least 47 listening, 48 reading, 51 writing and 54 speaking.
What score is Proficient and Superior English?
Proficient English is at least IELTS 7 in each band, and Superior English is at least IELTS 8 in each band, or the equivalent in another accepted test. On the skilled points test, Proficient gives 10 points and Superior gives 20 points.
What English score do I need for a Student visa?
Generally IELTS 6.0 overall or PTE Academic 47, or an equivalent accepted test. Lower scores can be accepted if you are enrolled in at least 10 or 20 weeks of ELICOS packaged with your main course. Some students are exempt.
What English score do I need for a 485 visa?
For tests from 7 August 2025, IELTS 6.5 overall with at least 5.5 in each band, or PTE Academic 55 overall with minimum section scores, or an equivalent accepted test taken in the 12 months before you apply.
Which English tests does Home Affairs accept?
IELTS Academic and General Training, PTE Academic, TOEFL iBT, OET, CELPIP General, LanguageCert Academic and the Michigan English Test. Cambridge C1 Advanced is accepted for some visas, but not for the 485 for tests taken from 7 August 2025. Check the requirements for your visa.
Are online or at-home tests accepted?
No. At-home and online versions such as IELTS Online, TOEFL iBT Home Edition and OET@Home are not accepted. For TOEFL, choose "Taking TOEFL for Australia" when you register.
Why does my overall score not count for Competent English?
Skilled English levels need the minimum score in every part of the test, not just the overall score. A single low band, such as writing, can drop you to a lower level.
Does the converter save my scores?
No. The tool runs entirely in your web browser. What you enter is not sent to Aussie ASEAN, Home Affairs or anyone else, and we never ask for your passport number or ImmiAccount password.
