Estimate your points for the Skilled Independent (189), Skilled Nominated (190) and Skilled Work Regional (491) visas. Points are assessed at the time you are invited to apply, and the minimum score to be invited is 65.
This calculator gives an estimate only and is not migration advice. Reaching 65 points does not guarantee an invitation: invitations depend on your occupation, your score compared with other applicants and, for the 190 and 491, state or territory nomination. Points values checked against the official Home Affairs points tables for the 189, 190 and 491 visas on 15 October 2026. The official Home Affairs points calculator is the reference.
The points test applies to the Skilled Independent (189), Skilled Nominated (190) and Skilled Work Regional (491) visas. The pass mark is 65. Choose your visa, then your age, English, work experience, qualifications, partner and other points, and the calculator totals your score using the official Home Affairs points tables.

Plain-English answers to the questions we are asked most often.
The minimum score to be invited to apply for a 189, 190 or 491 visa is 65 points. Reaching 65 does not guarantee an invitation: invitations depend on your occupation, how your score compares with other applicants and, for the 190 and 491, state or territory nomination.
Points are assessed at the time you are invited to apply. Your age, English test results, skills assessment and employment are all measured at the invitation date, and you must be able to prove every point you claimed in your Expression of Interest.
You can claim up to 15 points for skilled employment outside Australia and up to 20 points for skilled employment in Australia, in your nominated or a closely related occupation, for at least 20 hours a week in the 10 years before invitation. The combined total for employment is capped at 20 points.
A Skilled Nominated (190) invitation adds 5 points for state or territory nomination. A Skilled Work Regional (491) invitation adds 15 points for state or territory nomination or sponsorship by an eligible family member living in a designated regional area. The Skilled Independent (189) visa has no nomination points.
You get 10 points if you are single or your partner is an Australian citizen or permanent resident, or 10 points if your partner is applying with you, is under 45, has Competent English and a suitable skills assessment. You get 5 points if your partner is applying with Competent English only.
It uses the same points values as the official Home Affairs points tables, checked on the date shown below. It gives an estimate only. Your actual points depend on the evidence you can provide, so ask a registered migration agent to review your claims before you submit an Expression of Interest.
Competent English (for example IELTS 6 in each band) is the minimum and scores no points. Proficient English (IELTS 7 in each band, or equivalent) gives 10 points, and Superior English (IELTS 8 in each band, or equivalent) gives 20 points.
You may get 5 points each for meeting the Australian study requirement, completing a Professional Year in Australia, a credentialled community language (NAATI) and studying in regional Australia, and 10 points for a specialist education qualification (a master's by research or PhD from an Australian institution in an eligible STEM field).
Usually, yes. Invitations go to the highest-ranked Expressions of Interest in each occupation first, so scores well above 65 are often needed in competitive occupations. State nomination programs also set their own requirements.
