Plumbing Courses in Australia for International Students

Reviewed by Mohammad Saghir Khan, Registered Migration Agent (MARN 1170510)Last reviewed:

Quick answer

The plumbing trade qualification is the Certificate III in Plumbing (CPC32420), which is still current (Release 8, 23 September 2026). The Certificate IV in Plumbing and Services (CPC40920) suits experienced plumbers and hydraulic designers. Plumber (General) is on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List and Trades Recognition Australia (TRA) assesses it, but it is a licensed trade and is not eligible for TRA's Job Ready Program. Plumbing is licensed by each state. In Victoria, the Building and Plumbing Commission registers and licenses plumbers.

The Certificate III in Plumbing

CPC32420 is still the current Certificate III in Plumbing. A new release (Release 8) was published on 23 September 2026, but the code has not changed. You must complete one of four options: General Plumbing (at least 58 units), or General Plumbing with Roofing, Mechanical, or both. The training package requires every unit to be delivered and assessed in a real or closely simulated workplace, so ask providers about their practical facilities and work placements.

Registration and Licensing in Victoria

A plumbing qualification does not on its own let you do plumbing work. Each state and territory registers or licenses plumbers. In Victoria, the Building and Plumbing Commission took over from the Victorian Building Authority on 1 July 2025. Apprentices usually register after completing the Certificate III and passing the Commission's exam. If you complete the Certificate III outside an apprenticeship, as most international students do, you apply through the non-apprentice pathway. The Commission's class pages ask for at least 4 years of experience in the required areas, a construction induction (white) card and the prescribed units, and you may be asked to sit an exam. A licence, which lets you certify work, needs further experience and a separate exam.

Skills Assessment and Visas

Plumber (General), Gasfitter, Drainer, Roof Plumber and Airconditioning and Mechanical Services Plumber are on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List, which the 485 Post-Vocational Education Work stream requires. TRA assesses them. Recent CRICOS graduates usually start with a Provisional Skills Assessment for the 485 visa. However, TRA lists Plumber (General) as a licensed occupation that is not eligible for the Job Ready Program, so the usual step after the 485 for other trades does not apply. Your later skills assessment and visa plan depend on your licence and work history, so get individual advice before you enrol.
