Quick answer

International students can study carpentry through the Certificate III in Carpentry, which is now CPC30326 (released on 23 September 2026 and replacing CPC30220), or move into building management through the Diploma of Building and Construction (Building) CPC50220 or a construction management degree. New Carpentry Qualification

On 23 September 2026 the Certificate III in Carpentry CPC30220 was replaced by CPC30326, which is mapped as equivalent. Providers are moving to the new code, so check which version your course will deliver and how practical training is organised.

Licensing Is State-Based

A trade qualification does not on its own let you contract for building work. Each state and territory licenses builders and some trades. In Victoria, the Building and Plumbing Commission took over the role of the Victorian Building Authority on 1 July 2025. A Diploma of Building and Construction is commonly used as part of the path to a builder's registration.

Skills Assessment

Trades Recognition Australia assesses Carpenter and Carpenter and Joiner. Recent Australian CRICOS graduates usually complete a Provisional Skills Assessment for the Temporary Graduate (485) visa, then the Job Ready Program. Construction Project Manager is assessed by VETASSESS and generally needs a degree-level qualification plus relevant experience.
